90 Gallon Tank Dimensions
A standard 90 gallon tank is about 48 × 18 × 24 in (122 × 46 × 61 cm) on the outside, holds about 76–78 gallons (288–295 litres) of water once set up, and weighs about 860–880 lb (390–400 kg) filled. Exact sizes vary by brand: Aqueon lists 48½ × 18½ × 25⅛ in and Marineland 48⅜ × 18⅜ × 24⅞ in. The water and weight figures assume 2 inches of sand and water 1 inch below the rim.
- How long is a 90 gallon tank? About 48 in (122 cm). Aqueon: 48½ in; Marineland: 48⅜ in.
- How tall is a 90 gallon tank? About 24 in (61 cm). Aqueon: 25⅛ in; Marineland: 24⅞ in.
- How wide (front to back) is a 90 gallon tank? About 18 in (46 cm). Aqueon: 18½ in; Marineland: 18⅜ in.
- How much does a 90 gallon tank weigh? About 135 lb empty (Aqueon; Marineland 125 lb) and about 880 lb set up with water and 2 in of sand, on 6.2 sq ft of floor. Add your stand and rock.
- How much gravel or sand for a 90 gallon tank? About 96 lb of sand or 77 lb of gravel for a 2 in bed. Work out other depths and bags.

Not every 90 gallon is the same size
The “90 gallon” label is a class of tank, not an exact measurement. Here is what each source actually lists:
| Source | L × W × H (in) | Empty | Full |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aqueon size chart (90) | 48½ × 18½ × 25⅛ | 135 lb | 1,050 lb |
| Marineland ML10906 (dealer listing) | 48⅜ × 18⅜ × 24⅞ | 125 lb | 876 lb |
Checked 29 Sep 2026. Marineland's full weight (876 lb) is simply the label 90 gallons × 8.34 lb plus the empty tank. Aqueon's 1,050 lb is more than even the whole outside volume filled with water (949 lb); its chart notes that filled weights vary with substrate and decor. Neither includes the stand. The makers' "full" weights don't say how full; our set-up estimate further down uses the water left after 2 in of sand and a gap below the rim, plus the sand, so it can come out lower. Size your stand for the higher figure.
Same stand, four tanks
Four standard tanks sit on a 48 × 18 footprint. They differ only in height, so one stand, lid and 48 in light fit them all:
| Tank | L × W × H (in) | Outside volume |
|---|---|---|
| 60 gallon breeder | 48½ × 18½ × 16 | 62.1 gal |
| 75 gallon | 48½ × 18½ × 21⅛ | 82.1 gal |
| 90 gallon | 48½ × 18½ × 25⅛ | 97.6 gal |
| 110 gallon | 48⅜ × 18⅜ × 31 | 119.3 gal |
Aqueon size chart (60 breeder, 75, 90); Marineland dealer listing (110).
The stand has to be rated for the tallest tank you'll put on it: Aqueon lists 785 lb full for the 75 and 1,050 lb for the 90.
90 vs 75: what 4 more inches buys
The 90 is a 75 with about 4 in more height. Same footprint, same stand size, same lid. Here's what changes (Aqueon tanks, 2 in of sand, our estimates):
- About 13 more gallons of real water: roughly 77.8 against 65.1.
- About 141 lb more on the same 6.2 sq ft: the load rises from about 119 to 141 lb per square foot.
- A deeper reach. At about 25 in tall you'll need long tools or a step to reach the bottom, and lights need more output to reach plants on the substrate.
For fish that swim along the tank, the 75 and 90 give the same length and front-to-back depth. The 90's extra water adds stability and room for taller fish and aquascapes.
How much water a 90 gallon really holds
Multiply the outside dimensions of an Aqueon 90 and you get 97.6 gallons. You never get that much water, because of three things:
- Glass. With about 1/2 in glass (an estimate; check your tank), the inside is roughly 47½ × 17½ in.
- The gap at the top. Most people keep the water about an inch below the rim.
- Substrate. Two inches of sand takes up about 27 litres of space.
That leaves about 85.0 gallons with a bare bottom and 77.8 gallons with 2 in of sand. Use the real figure, not the label, when you dose medication or water conditioner.
Weight and stand
A set-up Aqueon 90 comes to about 880 lb: 135 lb of glass, about 649 lb of water and about 96 lb of sand, before rock and the stand itself. That sits on 6.2 square feet.
- A set-up 90 weighs about 880 lb before rock, and Aqueon lists 1,050 lb. Use a purpose-built stand rated for it.
- Put it on a ground floor or across the floor joists, close to a load-bearing wall. On upper or older floors, ask a builder first.
- Leave room behind and above for maintenance: you'll be reaching into 2 ft of water.

Will a 90 gallon fit? Stand, doorway and floor
What stand does a 90 gallon need?
One with a top at least 48½ × 18½ in, the Aqueon footprint, rated for at least 1,050 lb. That is the higher of the makers' full weights; our own set-up estimate is 880 lb. The whole bottom frame must sit on the stand, with nothing hanging over the edge.
Will a 90 gallon fit through a door?
Usually, yes. Carried end-first, the doorway only has to clear the tank's narrowest side, 18½ in (47 cm), plus room for your hands. The 48½ in length only matters on tight turns in halls and stairs. Empty, it weighs about 135 lb (Aqueon).
Can my floor hold a 90 gallon?
Set up, it puts about 880 lb on 6.2 sq ft, or about 141 lb per square foot, before the stand. US homes are designed for 40 lb per square foot spread over a whole living-room floor (IRC Table R301.5), so a tank concentrates its weight. Between about 400 and 1,000 lb, stand it across the floor joists rather than along one, close to a load-bearing wall, on a level floor. That weight band is our rule of thumb, not a code limit. Check your exact setup.
Equipment for a 90 gallon
| Item | Starting point | How we got it |
|---|---|---|
| Heater | 233–389 W | 3–5 W per gallon of real water; use the higher end in a cold room. |
| Filter | 311–467 gph | Turning over the water 4–6 times an hour |
| Sand, 2 in deep | ≈ 96 lb | Inside floor area × depth at about 1.6 kg per litre (estimate) |
| Light | 48 in | Match the tank length |
| Lid | 2 × 24 in (48 × 18) | Check the maker's fit list |
Rules of thumb, not guarantees. Fish choice, room temperature and filter type all change the right answer.
What a 90 gallon is good for
Four feet of length and 18 in of depth suit larger community fish and taller species that need vertical room. Check any mix in the stocking calculator.
How the numbers are worked out
Worked examples
Aqueon 90, 1/2 in glass, 1 in gap, 2 in sand: inside 47.5 × 17.5 in, water height 25.125 − 0.5 − 1 − 2 = 21.62 in. 47.5 × 17.5 × 21.62 = 17,976 in³ ÷ 231 = 77.8 gal (294.6 L).
Marineland 90, 1/2 in glass, 1 in gap, 2 in sand: inside 47.38 × 17.38 in, water height 24.875 − 0.5 − 1 − 2 = 21.38 in. 47.38 × 17.38 × 21.38 = 17,595 in³ ÷ 231 = 76.2 gal (288.3 L).
Bare-bottom Aqueon 90, 1/2 in glass, 1 in gap, 0 in sand: inside 47.5 × 17.5 in, water height 25.125 − 0.5 − 1 − 0 = 23.62 in. 47.5 × 17.5 × 23.62 = 19,638 in³ ÷ 231 = 85.0 gal (321.8 L).
FAQ
What are the dimensions of a 90 gallon aquarium?
About 48 × 18 × 24 in. Aqueon lists 48½ × 18½ × 25⅛ in and Marineland 48⅜ × 18⅜ × 24⅞ in.
How much does a 90 gallon tank weigh full?
Aqueon lists 1,050 lb and Marineland 876 lb. Our estimate with 2 in of sand is about 880 lb before rock.
Can a 75 gallon stand hold a 90 gallon tank?
The footprint is the same (48 × 18 in), so it fits. Only use it if the stand's rating covers the 90's weight, which is about 141 lb more when set up.
How many litres is a 90 gallon tank?
90 US gallons is 340.7 litres. Set up, expect about 288–322 litres of actual water.
Is a 90 gallon too tall?
At about 25 in tall it's the tallest common 4 ft tank below the 110. Reaching the bottom takes long tools, and plants on the substrate need a stronger light.
